1. Reminder: Updated Licence for Publication Form

The latest version of RevMan (5.0.16) contains the new Licence for Publication Form for both Protocols and Full Reviews. The new Declaration of Interest forms are not in RevMan 5 at the moment and it is unlikely that they will available in RevMan 5 until after the next RevMan Advisory Group meeting, scheduled to be held in January 2009, at the earliest.

2. Reminder: Implications for RevMan 4 drafts after converting the latest published version to RevMan 5 in Archie

Once you have converted a review to RevMan 5 in Archie:

  1. Any previous RevMan 4 version you revert to in Archie will automatically be converted to RevMan 5;
  2. You will not be able to check in any RevMan 4 drafts; instead, you will have to open the RevMan 4 file in RevMan 5, which will convert it to RevMan 5, before checking the draft into Archie.

3. Tip: Using Ctrl-F5 in RevMan 4.3

If you get a 'Document exception: document validation failed' message when checking a RM4 XML file ito Archie, this may indicate that there is a problem with the RevMan 4 file you have been sent. If this happens, we suggest that you press Ctrl-F5 (similar to View > Refresh in RevMan 5) in RevMan 4.3 before exporting the file as an XML RevMan 4.3 file, which may fix the problem. If it doesn't fix the problem, please contact your IMS Support person.

4. Deadline for local conversion of reviews to RevMan 5

If you opted to convert your Group's reviews to RevMan 5 locally, please remember that all your published reviews (including withdrawn reviews) must be converted to RevMan 5 by the November quarterly submission deadline, which is 07:00 GMT/UTC on 13 November 2008. Any published reviews that have not been converted to RevMan 5 by this deadline will automatically be converted to RevMan 5 for publication. Note that if such reviews fail the validation check in the Publication Wizard for RevMan 5 reviews, our publishers will not will be able to 'close' your quarterly submission until such time as you have corrected the Errors. From 13 November 2008, you will no longer be able to check RevMan 4 XML files into Archie - see 2.2 above.

5. IMS workshops at the Freiburg Colloquium

If you have not already done so, please remember to sign up for the 'Using workflows in Archie' workshop (specifically aimed at RGCs and Assistant RGCs) on 5 October and encourage your Editors to sign up for the 'Archie training for Cochrane Review Group (CRG) editors' workshop on 4 October 2008.

6. Question of the week

Question: Is it possible to insert non-Latin script into RevMan 5 and Archie? I would like to enter the titles of Chinese articles into RevMan 5 using Chinese characters but don't know how to do this.

Answer: No, it is not possible to enter non-Latin scripts into RevMan 5 and Archie because our publishers cannot support the publication of non-Latin scripts at the moment.
