1. Standardisation of Chinese names in the IMS
At present, Chinese names are entered in the IMS in many different ways resulting in several records for one person. As you know, there should be only one record for each individual in the IMS. Liz Dooley, on behalf of IMS Support, corresponded with the Chinese Cochrane Centre about standardising Chinese names in the IMS and suggested that the family name should be entered in the field currently called 'Last name'. We also proposed that the name in the IMS for this field should be changed to 'Family name' to make this clearer to people whose first language is not English. With the approval of the Chinese Cochrane Centre, this proposal was sent to the Publishing Policy Group who have since approved it. Although the title of this field has not yet been changed in the IMS, it would be helpful if you could make any necessary changes to the names of any Chinese authors you are responsible for to reflect this new policy.
2. IMS Support person in Europe
As you know, Gail Higgins has resigned as the IMS Support person for Europe because she is moving back to Australia. Her last day as a member of the team is today. The IMS team are sorry to lose Gail and would like to thank her for her enthusiasm and commitment to the work of the IMS and wish her well with her move back to Australia. We are pleased to know that Gail is not leaving the Collaboration. She will be working as the Trials Search Co-ordinator for the Renal Group.
Gail's replacement will start on 1 March 2005. Details will follow soon. In the meantime, Jacob Riis will be responsible for providing support to the CRGs that Gail has been supporting. From this afternoon, all emails sent to Gail's support email account will be forwarded automatically to jacob@support.cc-ims.net and the IMS webpage will be updated to reflect this.
3. What's new in the IMS?
Remember to check the 'What's new' in the IMS Help file regularly. Here is a summary of the 'What's new' dated 26 January 2005. * Improved search: in addition to searching for persons you can search for entities and documents. * Improved export: The export wizard can now export entities. * Select persons from Resource section: Persons can now be selected from the Resources section. Right-click on a person and choose Select or Deselect. From the right-click menu on a role folder under People, you can also select/deselect all persons with that role.
4. IMS Questions of the week
Question: How are the 'changes suggested' messages I receive under My Tools created?
Answer: By suggesting a change through the 'Suggest Changes' button in a person's 'Properties'. For more details on suggesting changes and receiving suggested changes, go to www.cochrane-net.org/imshelp/resources/people/Suggesting_changes.htm .
Question: Will there be IMS training opportunities similar to those being planned for the UK Contributors' meeting?
Answer: We are happy to arrange similar sessions at other regional meetings during 2005. We are in contact with the organisers of the European contributors' meeting, to be held this spring, about organising an IMS workshop during this event. If you are aware of other regional meetings being planned then please let us know. Information about IMS workshops are published on the IMS website: http://www.cc-ims.net/Projects/newIMS/Training/.
